Anatomical Studies on the Auditory Ossicles in Koreans

Abstract
An attempt was made to reveal the architecture of the auditory ossicular chain by the following method. The ossicular chain was embedded with Phenol for1nalJehyde in the natural state of the tympanic cavity and then removed without damage from the tenporal hone. X-ray were taken of the embedded auditory ossicles from three different right angle directions and the angles were calculated.
The conclusions obtained from this study were as follows:
1) The distances between the tip of the short limb of the incus and the various lateral points of the malleus showed increase from infancy to adulthood, while the distance between the end of the manubrium and the end of the long limb of the incus, and the distance between both tips of the malleus and incus were almost epual in both infant and adult.
2) The position of the auditory ossicular chain in the tympanic cavity changed from infancy to adulthood by rotating the lateral part of the chain toward the antero-medial side and rotating the medial part toward the postero-medial side with fixation of the foot-plate of the stapes at the oval window.
3) The ratio of the lever effect at Dabmann rotation axis was almost the same in both infant and adult, but the ratio at Fumagalli gravity axis was larger in adult than in infant and the ratio at Sakai rotation axis was larger in infant than in adult.
4) The angle formed by the long axes of the malleus and incus was almost equal in both infant and adult, e. g. both long axes were almost parallel to each other and perpendicular to Dahmann rotation axis.
